Classroom Paraprofessional

St. Coletta of Greater Washington is a non-sectarian, nonprofit organization that supports individuals with intellectual disabilities, autism, and secondary disabilities. We are currently seeking A Classroom Paraprofessional who will be responsible for providing one-to-one support to an assigned student and assisting the teacher in providing a learning environment that improves and develops the student’s social, communication, and intellectual skills

Examples of Essential Functions:

Assists assigned student with physical care, feeding, medication, mobility, or other skills as designated by the teacher or therapist.
Reinforces skills introduced by the teacher and provides instruction to students as prescribed by the teacher; may utilize games, stories, or other construction activities to enhance learning skills.
Assists students with gross motor activities such as grasping, holding objects, posture, crawling, and walking. The ability to lift and position physically disabled individuals may be required..
Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and community-based instruction. The ability to keep up with running children and or to lift or assist with lifting students is essential to perform this task.
Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED and prior experience working with people with intellectual disabilities. Must be at least 18 years of age.
Demonstrated ability to fulfill the dexterity and physical requirements of the work, and effectively attend to the needs of a student with intellectual disabilities
• Ability to work with individuals and small groups of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with all employees.
• Ability to prepare and maintain required program records.
• Ability to assist supervising instructional staff in preparing and organizing materials.

About St. Coletta Special Education Public Charter School (DC)

St. Coletta of Greater Washington is a non-profit organization, which serves children and adults with intellectual disabilities, autism, or multiple disabilities. Our special education school serves students ages 3-22 years old. Each student has an IEP, and in addition to participating in classroom activities, is able to receive various forms of therapy on campus.  Our core program includes: functional academics, skills of daily living, community based instruction, adaptive physical education, arts education, computer skills and vocational training. The school is located in Washington, DC, and community based instruction is an important part of the programming, as are activities focused on teaching vocational and life skills. Our Adult Programs offers adults ages 18 and older opportunities to participate in vocational / pre-vocational training, supported employment, life skills training, and community integration in order to achieve greater independence.
