Job Overview

The Head Start Instructional Aide assists the Head Start classrooms by performing instructional duties, supervising student behavior, learning and applying specific behavior management techniques, and providing assistance with meals, personal hygiene and physical care needs as required.  The work is performed under the guidance and supervision of the teacher. 

 

Roles and Responsibilities

The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed. This is not a comprehensive listing of all responsibilities or tasks; work may differ and other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate.

  • Provide classroom coverage to allow for classroom planning time.
  • Provides individual and group instruction on activities as instructed by the teacher.
  • Prepares and assists the classroom for meals and activities.
  • Monitor students during rest time.
  • Monitor students during outdoor activities.
  • In collaboration with Head Start Teacher, implements behavior modification plans in accordance with the Head Start program philosophy and monitors students’ safety. 

 

  

Qualifications

Below are the minimum qualifications for this job. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are also acceptable. 

  • A minimum of a High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience working with preschool age children
  • Ability to learn to perform individual medical assistance when necessary.
  • Experience in working with diverse cultures
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills 
  • Bi-lingual preferred
