Job Overview

The Attendance Officer is responsible for the enforcement of the compulsory attendance laws for the Commonwealth of Virginia and Loudoun County Public Schools.

 

Roles and Responsibilities

The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed. This is not a comprehensive listing of all responsibilities or tasks; work may differ and other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate.

  • Investigates any incidence of a child believed to be or reported to be truant from school.
  • Assists school administration in residency verification based on local and state requirements.
  • Works in coordination with the schools and other agencies to improve student attendance and enforces compulsory attendance laws.
  • Investigates all cases of non-enrolled children.
  • Collaborates with school teams in meetings to develop attendance plans and monitor interventions for students exceeding 5 days of unexcused absences.
  • Initiates legal proceedings against any parent or guardian who unlawfully fails to cause his/her children to attend school or any parent who induces or attempts to induce any child to be absent unlawfully from school and attends all scheduled court cases.
  • Maintains records of any cases prosecuted and other services performed.
  • Provides parent/guardian consultation as needed for attendance concerns.
  • Collaborates with school-based mental health team members to monitor chronic absenteeism and provide resources to students and families.
  • Coordinates the re-enrollment process for students transitioning from state care facilities

 

 

Qualifications

Below are the minimum qualifications for this job. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are also acceptable.

 

     Education

     Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in counseling, teaching, or a related field; Master’s  Degree in school counseling, mental health, or school social work preferred.

 

     Experience

     Experience working with children and adolescents in a counseling, teaching, and/or human services capacity

 

     Licenses and Certifications

     NA

 

     Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proven professional and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, parents, court authorities, school, and community agency personnel
  • Excellent demonstrated skills and abilities in oral and written communication, time management, conflict resolution and consensus building

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly talking, expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. The employee must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly. The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn, recall and apply certain practices and policies. Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

Salary Level: Scale B/Universal - Exempt Level 14
