Job Description:

 

The Special Education Instructional Specialist will be responsible for providing instructional support and coaching to special education teachers as they work to ensure that each student with a disability is provided specially designed instruction aligned with supports and services indicated on the IEP. An essential role is working with school leadership and teachers to support student growth through the development of standards based IEPs, data analysis, implementation of targeted interventions, analysis of school wide trends in instruction, and making recommendations about potential next steps to address areas of need for students with disabilities.

 

This position is an 11 month/216 day position.

 

Qualifications:

 

Education: Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred

 

Certificates and Licenses: Valid Virginia license with endorsement in special education.

 

Experience: Five years of public school teaching experience

 

 

Essential Functions:

 

Instructional Services:

  • Assist special education teachers in the development of standards based IEPs that are aligned to the general curriculum and the Virginia Standards of Learning.
  • Provide ongoing feedback opportunities through coaching and modeling of inclusive practices through capacity building for administrators, teachers and support staff.
  • Develop and implement professional learning opportunities for special education and general education teachers in co-teaching, specially designed instruction and data collection and analysis.
  • Possess knowledge of general education and special education curriculum, assessment, and classroom accommodations and modifications.

Specialized Instruction:

  • Provide modeling of current practices in the areas of inclusive practices including co-teaching, specially designed instruction and special education service delivery for special education teachers in general education and/or special education learning environments.
  • Assist teachers in the development and implementation of lesson plans that provide students access to the general education curriculum and specially designed instruction through.
  • The specialist shall have excellent skills and knowledge of differentiation of instruction as well as varying teaching methodologies, intervention programs and best instructional practices/strategies to meet the needs of students with disabilities.

Assessment and Progress Monitoring:

  • Support the collection, analysis, and interpretation of progress monitoring data for students with disabilities.
  • Facilitate ongoing progress monitoring in the areas of Reading and Math for students with disabilities.

Communication and Interpersonal Competencies:

  • The specialist shall demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills in order to effectively implement the division inclusion plan.
  • The specialist shall possess the consultation skills required to work well with general and special education teachers, support staff, administrators and parents.

Clearances

  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.

Public Health Compliance

  • Must follow safety and health protocols.
