Job Description

 

The HR Generalist-II position at Alexandria City Public Schools is a pivotal role focused on managing leave and benefits services for employees. Reporting to the Director of Compensation & Benefits, this position requires a blend of technical expertise, customer service, and interpersonal skills. 

 

This job reports to the Director of Compensation & Benefits.

 

Qualifications

 

Education:  Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration, public administration, or a related field; equivalent training and experience also acceptable.

 

Certificates & Licenses:  HR Certification preferred.

 

Experience:  At least five years in compensation, benefits, and/or leave administration or HR management with a significant focus on compensation or benefits. This role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving, a strong commitment to customer service, and the ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.

 

Key Competencies:

 

  • 2-5 years of experience in employee compensation, benefits or insurance administration.
  • Ability to work efficiently under tight deadlines and manage multiple tasks/projects.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Self-management in a fast-paced environment with problem-solving capabilities.
  • Proficient in Excel and adept at navigating online systems.
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and written communication skills.
  • Customer-service orientation in HR settings.
  • Experience in developing educational and training materials.

Essential Functions

 

  • Leave Management: Administer various leave types (e.g., FMLA, personal leave) ensuring compliance with legal requirements and proper documentation.
  • Workers’ Compensation: Oversee the program, track employee leave, and coordinate with third-party administrators.
  • Substitute Management: Ensure accurate and timely processing of substitute pay.
  • Benefits Administration: Manage health, welfare, and retirement plans, process enrollments and life events, and communicate benefits information effectively.
  • Classification: assist Director of Compensation and Benefits in managing the reclassification process to collect documents and respond to process inquires.
  • Compensation: Assist Compensation Specialist with: maintaining and processing year employee contracts, position management in HRIS system, yearly contract to employee audit process, year division calendar creation process, and processing employee actions in HRIS system.
  • Customer Service: Address inquiries and resolve issues regarding compensation and benefits with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Compliance: Ensure adherence to government and state regulations related to compensation and benefits administration.
  • Subject Matter Expertise: Act as a resource for employees, vendors, and auditors regarding but not limited to benefits enrollment, OSHA Filing, Family and Medical Leave Act, workers’ compensation, classification, total compensation, and/or Virginia Legislation relating to public schools.
  • Open Enrollment: Assist in the annual benefits enrollment process, including communication and presentations.
  • Special Projects: Participate in identifying inefficiencies and completing assigned projects.
  • Additional Responsibilities
  • Ensure effective communication with employees about their benefits and eligibility.
  • Manage and review new hire documentation for employees and dependents.
  • Collaborate with Payroll to ensure accurate deductions for employees on leave.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.

Public Health Compliance

  • Must follow safety and health protocols.
