SUMMARY:  
Provides support and instruction to students identified for an abeyance agreement or students returning from expulsion.  Responsible for planning and/or monitoring instruction within core subject areas of literacy, math, and social-emotional learning, based on each student’s program plan to ensure students achieve reinstatement into the school setting.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Plans, implements, reviews and modifies a curriculum, schedule or course of study to meet the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
  2. Instructs and supports students individually and in small groups.
  3. Participates in the Student Support Team (SST) process to develop, review, evaluate, and implement a reentry plan for students participating in the  program.
  4. Collaborates and communicates with students’ other teachers to plan student learning experiences.
  5. Collaborates, plans, models, and teaches effectively in both an individual and team environment with other staff.
  6. Monitors and evaluates students’ work and behavioral expectations and progress. Utilizes technology platforms and tools for instruction and recordkeeping.  Updates students’ goals and plans to ensure reinstatement conditions are met.
  7. Provides qualitative and quantitative feedback to students and parents/caregivers, participates in regular parent/caregiver/teacher meetings, including reentry and reinstatement meetings.
  8. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to achieve an effective and safe learning environment.  Uses a restorative approach in resolving conflict and teaching behavioral skills.
  9. Participates in collaborative meetings as needed.
  10. Continues professional growth.
  11. Acts as a liaison for the students, with staff, supervisors, administrators, community resources, and parents/caregivers.
  12. Collaborates and communicates with families to improve student learning. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position supervises the following positions:
Supervises students and paraprofessionals.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in education.  Experience, training, or coursework in enrichment and interventions for dependent or independent learners, special education, social-emotional learning, and/or restorative practices.
 
COMMUNICATION AND LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret secondary level literacy, writing, and communication concepts.  Ability to effectively use teacher manuals and instructional resources.  Ability to effectively present information and communicate verbally and in writing with students, staff, administrators, and parents.
 
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to work with secondary level mathematical concepts.  Ability to apply mathematical concepts to practical, real world problems.
 
ANALYTICAL AND REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions to support student learning.  Ability to interpret a variety of abstract and concrete data points or variables.
 
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.  Apply lessons based on building and district objectives to meet the needs of all students.  Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and community.  Ability to use computers and other technology to accomplish job responsibilities.
 
TEMPERAMENTS:
Ability to deal with people, direct others, and influence people in their attitudes, opinions, and judgments.  Must be highly flexible with multi-organizational skills.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES:
Must possess and maintain or be eligible to hold a current Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction license at the level they are teaching. Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction license to teach alternative education #1952.  Special education license preferred but not required.  Must possess valid driver’s license.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Shall complete a physical examination as required by Wisconsin Statute 118.25.
