School Wellness Coach

Catapult Learning's School Wellness Coach leads nutrition education and wellness programming for students and guardians, builds relationships with school personnel and promotes implementation of the School District of Philadelphia’s (SDP) School Wellness Policy and other nutrition and physical activity goals. Promotes a school culture of health and provides support to school staff around creating an environment that prioritizes healthy eating and physical activity. This position is a multi-site, school-based position. This is a full time, 11 month position.
How you’ll be there for students:
Be their advocate, difference maker, and mentor.
- Works with the target audience of SDP students, parents, guardians, and families to develop adequate nutrition and physical activity habits by;
- Implementing nutrition education lessons, workshops, and hands-on activities (e.g. cooking, food preparation, simple gardening, etc.),
- Supporting school staff with creating a healthy school environment through promotional efforts, tabling, signage, bulletin boards, social media, and other various communication strategies that reach the target audience,
- Demonstrating, role-modeling, or providing support to classroom teachers or school staff on nutrition lessons and wellness activities,
- Supporting SDP management staff with trainings and professional development opportunities for teachers, nurses and other school-based staff,
- Linking nutrition education and wellness efforts with healthy food distributions that are provided by other external food security organizations (e.g. Share Food Program, Philabundance, etc.),
- Participating in various school events (e.g. back-to-school nights, school advisory council meetings, community meetings, etc.) where nutrition and wellness can be highlighted and reinforced,
- Assisting SDP management staff and individual school personnel with assessment of a school's wellness needs by utilizing grant or SDP tools that assess readiness, capacity, and/or implementation of SDP’s School Wellness Policy, and
- Encouraging and supporting schools with development and maintenance of a “School Wellness team” to address needs around implementation of SDP’s School Wellness Policy and other changes that increase healthy eating and activity behaviors
- Prepares and/or transports food items needed for taste-testing or sampling during activities and events
- Builds, maintains, and grows relationships with school staff at assigned schools
- Supports SDP management with program planning efforts
- Attends and engages in training opportunities associated with school wellness, grant, and SDP initiatives
- Collects and properly completes documentation for grant and District needs
- Administers and/or assists with evaluation tools and processes when asked
- Other related duties and assignments related to school wellness, grant, and SDP goals
Core Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of nutrition education, school wellness, and USDA’s Food Guidance System and U.S. Dietary Guidelines (ex - MyPlate and SNAP/SNAP-Edu)
- Ability to implement nutrition education programs and activities for students, guardians, and school staff
- Ability to prepare materials for programming
What we’ll need from you:
The positive, enthusiastic School Wellness Coach we seek has these qualifications.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in public health, education, nutrition, or dietetics
- Two years of professional experience in nutrition, dietetics, public health, or community outreach which has included conducting nutrition or wellness focused programming or equivalent combination of training and experience
- Ability to work independently, manage time and schedule, and meet grant goals and deadlines
- Flexibility in scheduling including school day and out of school time hours
- Strong communicator and collaborator
- Personal commitment to promoting and being a role model for healthy eating and physical activity
- Capable of physical aspects of work including lifting, carrying, and transporting materials and supplies, demonstrating physical activity movements, and stair climbing.
- Proficiency with using MS Office applications and Google applications (e.g. G-Suite, Gmail, Google Calendar, etc.)
- Ability to acquire, maintain, and submit all required clearances for school personnel
- Must be willing to travel locally to various schools - a valid driver’s license, insurance and car is required (mileage reimbursement is provided).
- Bilingual communication is a plus
- Food preparation/cooking skills a plus
