Substitutes are important to the success of the total school program and are expected to perform in place of the regular scheduled employee as directed by the school administrator. Substitutes are expected to support the FCPS mission to inspire, enable, and empower students to meet high academic standards, lead ethical lives and demonstrate responsible citizenship. Duties may include a variety of paraprofessional curriculum and instructional tasks to support teachers and other professional staff in a general or special education classroom or learning environment and assisting with the daily management of the students and classroom.

A high school diploma is required to become a substitute instructional assistant. Must be able to communicate effectively in English orally and in writing; to understand and follow oral and written instructions and perform all required tasks; and to work effectively with children and, young adults, as well as faculty and staff.
