HEAVY DUTY MECHANIC
Purpose Statement:
The job of Heavy Duty Mechanic is done for the purpose/s of performing skilled, journey-level mechanical repair and maintenance work on large gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment; providing written documentation of repairs to meet district, state and federal requirements; and ensuring compliance with District, state and federal regulations.
This job reports to Director, Transportation
Essential Functions
• Analyzes vehicle computer-related systems for the purpose of diagnosing computer system components and providing needed repairs.
• Diagnoses mechanical defects on gasoline and diesel powered school buses, trucks, fire apparatus, automobiles, agricultural, earth moving and other mechanical equipment for the purpose of determining needed vehicle repairs and/or replacements.
• Fabricates braces, fittings and parts for the purpose of providing repair or retrofit parts.
• Inspects school buses and related gasoline and diesel powered mechanical equipment (e.g. fluid levels, air pressure, brakes, lights, safety equipment, smog compliance, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring compliance with safety and California Highway Patrol Motor Carrier regulations and/or maintaining District equipment in proper working order.
• Maintains shop area, tools and equipment for the purpose of ensuring availability and proper functioning of equipment and adhering to OSHA standards.
• Mill and lathe machine works parts and tools for the purpose of ensuring availability and proper functioning of equipment.
• Orders parts and equipment for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items as needed.
• Performs minor body repairs for the purpose of maintaining appearance and safe operation of vehicles.
• Prepares documentation for the purpose of tracking labor and parts and information to comply with regulating guidelines.
• Provides guidance to other vehicle maintenance employees for the purpose of assisting with work assignments and quality control.
• Reads, understands, applies electrical and hydraulic schematics for the purpose of performing needed repairs/replacements within specifications.
• Repairs vehicle systems/equipment/components, etc. (e.g. fuel systems, engines, skip loader, tractors, backhoes, dump trucks, trailers, smog checks, adjust/repair/replaces/ overhauls transmissions, bearing, ignitions, carburetors, brakes, hydraulics, electrical systems, differentials drive trains, steering, suspension, body work, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining vehicles in a safe and attractive manner.
• Replaces defective vehicle parts or systems for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition.
• Responds to emergency road calls for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.
Not Evaluated Functions
• Performs welding and repairs (e.g. arc, mig, oxy, etc.) for the purpose of providing new/repaired equipment and materials.
Other Functions
• Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.
• Attends workshops, meetings, activities, technical schools, etc. for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment used in vehicle maintenance and repair; adhering to safety practices; handling hazardous materials; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: internal combustion engines and related equipment;vehicle computer related equipment repair; pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; safety practices and procedures; and health standards and hazards.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities; collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using a variety of processes. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize a wide variety of types of job-related equipment. In working with others, some problem solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; and working with frequent interruptions.

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; providing information and/or advising others; and operating within a defined budget. Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 5% sitting, 45% walking, and 50% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and some hazardous conditions.
Experience Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is desired.
Education Targeted job related education that meets organization’s prerequisite requirements.
