Job DescriptionAre you passionate about providing an individualized virtual education so students are prepared to enter the workforce or continue with postsecondary education regardless of circumstance?Heron Virtual Academy of South Carolina (HVASC)is an accredited public school serving students in grades 8-12. HVASC offers smaller staff-to-student ratios, personalized graduation plans, daily mentoring sessions and wraparound services to help meet the educational and social/emotional needs of our unique student population.Learn more:Working at CASC/HVASCSpecial Education Teacher provide instruction, support and guidance, manage the learning process, and focus on students’ individual needs as defined by each student’s IEP. The special education teacher is also responsible for the compliance documents required in serving students with special needs.This is a full-time position. Ability to work independently, typically 40+ hours per week is required. Ability to maintain a professional home office without distraction during workday, typically 9-5 (or 8-4) or as defined by the school.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties.Implement instructional strategies that stimulate learning and increase student engagementCreate instructional resources to meet the varying needs of studentsCollaborate with parents and colleagues to manage coarse goals, curriculum, and materials that enhance the learning experienceActively participate in Professional Learning Communities (or professional development)Host live synchronous sessions that promote a positive learning environmentAnalyze student data to prescribe remediation and enrichment as neededParticipate in data analysis meetings to monitor student growthCollects data and work samples to support documentation of IEP goals;Documents all contact with parents, collaborations with general education teachers, and interventions with studentsMakes modifications and accommodations to K12 lessons and assessments as specified by the IEPCollaborates with general education teachers to ensure inclusion and success of student in the general education classroomCollaborates on all progress, semester and grade reportsProvides special education services to students; supports general education teachers and parents with student accommodations to promote the attainment of IEP goalsCommunicates with parents and applicable related service staff to ensure that students with special needs are receiving the appropriate therapiesEnsures compliance by holding all IEP meetings prior to the IEP end dateEnters accommodations into school based program to ensure 100% accommodation compliance for all testing sessionsAttends school based face to face outings and professional development sessions as scheduledRelationship BuildingEstablishes and maintains positive rapport with families and regularly communicates with students and learning coaches/parents;Teachers support learning coaches/parents with student curricular and instructional issues in a virtual classroom environment that is in line with academy policies and procedures;Supports students and learning coaches with the set-up and maintenance of their learning environment including basic computer troubleshooting;Understands how both diverse and unique characteristics of students and their families impact required support;Works collaboratively with other teachers to ensure that all students are successfully progressing through the program, that parents have a central point of contact, and that tasks are distributed among the stakeholders;Responds to students, parents, and colleagues in a timely manner.Other Essential FunctionsOrganizes social and educational activities for students and families, including sponsorship of virtual clubs, outings, marketing events or other extracurricular activities as required;Travels to testing sites to proctor state exams.Certificates and Licenses:Appropriate South Carolina state Special Education teaching certificationResidency Requirements:South Carolina residency preferred​MINIMUM REQUIREDQUALIFICATIONS:Bachelor’s Degree(s) ANDMinimum six (6) months of student teaching experienceTeachers with one or more years of teaching experience are required to provide past performance data.Teaching Certificate(s)TranscriptsPerformance EvaluationsPrior Year State Assessment DataReference Letter(s)REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:Bachelor's degree ANDSix (6) months of student teaching experience ANDAbility to clear required background check(s)DESIREDQUALIFICATIONS:Pedagogical knowledge of content being taught and ability to apply critical thinkingKnowledge of state content standards and ability to align those with the K12 curriculumAbility to embrace change and adapt to ensure excellent student outcomesAbility to problem solve independently and have a high level of organizationUnderstanding of interdependency of deadlines on multiple projects and able to act to preserve integrity on other people's deadlinesAbility to work independently, typically 40+ hours per weekAbility to maintain a professional home office without distraction during workday, typically 9-5 (or 8-4) or as defined by the schoolAbility to travel as required (on average once per month and/or approximately 10% of the time) for face-to-face professional development, student testing, and as required by schoolAccess to reliable high-speed internetProficient in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word; Non-certified staff are compensated based on a combination of education and relevant experience.
