Position:  Hourly Laborer - Maintenance 

              (temporary/hourly assignment)

                            

Salary:    $15.00 per hour

 

Location: Department of Maintenance/Various Sites

NATURE OF WORK:

Maintenance Trades I is not permanently assigned to a specific trade area.  The main function of a part-time/hourly employee in this classification is to perform unskilled or semi-skilled labor for the Department of Maintenance as a whole.  The employee will be utilized in the assistance of seasonal activities such as grounds care, moving and deliveries, minor carpentry, snow removal, air filter changes, roof maintenance, etc. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Ability to cares for lawns, shrubbery, trees, and flowerbeds using hand and power tools and equipment
  • Ability to operate ground tractors and mowers
  • Knowledge of semi-skilled labor in support of multiple trades, such as painting, grounds, roofing, mechanical, and vehicle transportation
  • Ability to clean, weed, and rake playgrounds
  • Knowledge of filters for mechanical air handling equipment
  • Ability to re-mulching and general grounds clean-up activities
  • Ability to follow both written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to Lift and carry heavy objects
  • Ability to work at elevated heights

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides semi-skilled labor in support of multiple trades, such as painting, grounds, roofing, mechanical, and vehicle transportation
  • Replaces filters for mechanical air handling equipment
  • Assists in re-mulching and general grounds clean-up activities
  • Provides basic ground maintenance including turf cutting, aeration, seeding, and trimming 
  • Operates motorized or heavy-duty equipment such as trucks, tractors, mowers, edgers, chainsaws, and tillers
  • Spreads topsoil and sand
  • Cleans, weeds, and rakes flowerbeds and playgrounds
  • Makes minor repairs and alterations on floors, windows, furniture, and other wooden structures
  • Oils and lubricates mechanical and ground equipment and machines
  • Prepares interior and exterior walls and other building structural surfaces by washing, brushing, sanding, and scraping
  • Applies paint, varnishes, stains, and waterproofing agents to these surfaces
  • Cleans gutters and rooftop drains. Assists in the stripping of roof materials and applications of new membranes or materials
  • Operates automobiles, trucks, forklifts, and grounds tractors
  • Makes general deliveries in schools and facilities
  • Assists mechanical trades in the care and cleaning of boilers and other mechanical equipment
  • Performs other related and non-related job duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Basic grounds care and maintenance repairs
  • Basic experience in plumbing, concrete work, roofing, painting, small engine mechanics, or other related skills
  • Basic experience with hand and power tools
  • Must be able to fulfill the following physical requirements
    • Lift and carry up to 75 pounds
    • Climb ladders up to 15 feet high

Preferred: 

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with no more than four (4) Maryland current points. The applicant must not be convicted, pleaded guilty or nolo contendere, or received a probation before judgment or stet docket entry for any alcohol or controlled substances offense under federal or state law for a minimum of five (5) years prior to the use of Board-owned vehicle (Board Policy EEBA)

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:

Temporary/hourly assignment.

 

SALARY GRADE RANGE:  The salary for this temporary/hourly position is $15.00 per hour.

 

BARGAINING UNIT: Not Eligible.
