Job Overview
This is work providing instructional support, training, and assistance to deaf and hard of hearing students. An employee in this class is responsible for assisting the teacher by performing instructional duties, preparing classroom materials, supervising student behavior, learning and applying specific behavior management techniques, performing clerical duties, and providing assistance with personal hygiene and physical care as required.
Roles and Responsibilities
The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed. This is not a comprehensive listing of all responsibilities or tasks; work may differ and other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate.
- Provides individual and group instructional support as assigned by the teacher.
- Assists the teacher by having materials ready; presents activities in any of the following areas including but not limited to: cognitive, speech and language, literacy, special and general education curriculum fine motor, gross motor, social/emotional, and daily living skills.
- Reinforces concepts and practice skills using teaching strategies effective for deaf and hard of hearing students.
- Provides language expansion on the spoken, interpreted and/or signed message for deaf/hard of hearing students in the classroom as needed.
- Assists the teacher of the deaf/hard of hearing in maintaining students’ personal equipment and school provided amplification.
- Collects and records student data under the supervision and direction of the Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing.
- Provides discipline in the absence of the teacher and maintains consistency with procedures established by LCPS.
- Implements behavior modification plans, IEPs, and other interventions as determined by the educational team.
- Practices individual speech sounds, vocabulary, and syntax objectives with students as directed by the speech therapist; reads to students and asks questions to stimulate language development; presents language activities involving expressive and receptive areas of development.
- Supervises learning centers during independent student work and participates in classroom activities such as discussions and games.
- Operates computers and audiovisual equipment.
Qualifications
Below are the minimum qualifications for this job. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are also acceptable.
Education
High school diploma or GED
Experience
Experience working with school-aged children and/or persons who are deaf or hard-of-hearing
Licenses and Certifications
Hold a current screening level of 1 awarded by the Virginia Quality Assurance Screening Program of the Department of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing; or have completed the college course work in American Sign Language of Signed Communication 100 or Signed Communication 110 with a grade of B or higher; or exhibit sign language skills and knowledge of the culture of the deaf commensurate with the above training as evaluated through an interview process
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrated effective communication skills in spoken and/or written English
- Ability to work under the supervision of the teacher, including following lesson plans prepared by teachers
- Strong organization and interpersonal and decision-making skills
- Ability to operate standard office equipment, learn to operate video equipment, learn to maintain students’ hearing equipment and school provided amplification , and learn to perform medical procedures when necessary
- Ability to make all families feel welcome in the school and the community
- Ability to work efficiently and ensure accurate data entry
- Ability to work effectively with individual children and small groups, meeting the instructional objectives as established by the teacher
- Good human relations and communications skills, including patience and flexibility
- Demonstrated ability to ensure confidentiality, discretion and sensitivity to diverse family situations
- Ability to work at a fast pace and ability to multitask
