TITLE:

Assistant Custodian

2nd Shift 

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

We are currently seeking a reliable, responsible assistant custodians to help maintain and care for our facilities. The ideal candidate would be a person who is careful and thorough in his/her work, cleaning and tidying the premises with great care and an eye for detail. If you are reliable, focused, committed to building upkeep, and have great physical stamina, we want to hear from you.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Prior custodial experience is desirable but not mandatory.

Ability to read and interpret instructions, work requests, and labels on chemical supplies; to communicate clearly and concisely with staff and students; to work independently, prioritize tasks and manage several projects simultaneously; to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements, state and federal laws, and Framingham Public Schools policies; have a good prior work record with respect to performance, congeniality, tardiness, absenteeism, honesty, and dependability.

Employees will be expected to have reliable transportation as assignments can be at different locations among the 15 schools as needed.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as an illustration of the various types of work that may be performed.   • Performs various custodial duties such as sanitizing, cleaning, scrubbing, stripping, waxing, buffing, dusting furniture, equipment moving, etc. required to maintain a clean and safe environment following established practices and procedures.
  • Vacuum and shampoo carpeting.
  • Wash windows, mirrors, glass and other surfaces.
  • Cleans and washes chalkboards, trays, and erasers.
  • Changes light bulbs as required both inside and outside.
  • Dust and cleans furniture, equipment, sills, ledges, heating grills, ventilation units, walls, ceilings, stairs, boilers, etc.
  • Sweeps/shovels snow and applies sand and salt. Chips ice from exterior walks, steps, terraces, etc.
  • Empties wastebaskets, trash receptacles from offices, classrooms, lounges, kitchen, gymnasium, corridors and bathrooms. Places rubbish for pick up.
  • Sets up rooms as required.
  • Inspect interior and exterior of building for vandalism.
  • Request corrective action through the senior custodian.
  • Reports emergencies to the senior custodian.
  • Works overtime during emergencies or as required to service permits.
  • Observes all safety rules.
  • Through the senior custodian, regulates the HVAC system to provide appropriate indoor temperature.
  • Opens or locks all exit doors. Checks panic hardware, door closers. Reports any malfunctions.
  • Performs grounds and play area responsibilities. Cuts grass, trims, fertilizes and weeds, performs minor exterior repairs, litter picks up, etc.
  • Performs minor building/equipment repairs. Handles minor painting/touch up.
  • Oils, lubricates, maintains equipment, changes filters.
  • Checks fire safety, emergency lighting, fires/smoke alarm, deluge showers, eyewash stations.
  • Recommends reordering of supply items to the senior custodian.
  • Performs any paperwork required.
  • Works congenitally with all building personnel, visitors, co-workers, superiors, etc.
  • Performs other similar/related duties as required or requested.

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to bend, sit, move, hear and speak. Noise level may be high when operating power equipment. The employee required to work in restricted spaces to include crawling and/or climbing as working at heights. Required to stand, be on feet, and move around for a full work shift. The employee must be able to work using ladders, scaffolding, mechanical lifts and district vehicles. Ability to spend most of the work-day standing, lifting, and walking. Ability to lift up to 60 pounds and move heavier materials using appropriate equipment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials or illnesses during the course of their duties. Wearing of protective equipment, such as latex gloves, per OSHA regulations is required.

 

REPORTS TO:  

Senior Building Custodians and/or Shift Foreperson. The performance of this job will be evaluated as per the Framingham Custodial Services (Unit C) Contract.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

None.

 

FAIR LABOR STANDARDS ACT (FLSA) CLASSIFICATION:

This position is classified as Non-Exempted.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Covered under Framingham School Custodial Services Contract. Please note that the District reserves the right to transfer all personnel among buildings on an as-needed basis to serve the best interests of all students as long as this does not conflict with the Framingham Custodial Services  (Unit C) Contract.
