School Nurse - Substitute

Burlington School District is seeking a passionate Nurse - School Substitute to provide school health services in grades PK-12. School nurses strengthen and facilitate the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of students and staff; identifying, assisting, overseeing, and collaborating with other school personnel in the removal or modification of health-related barriers to the learning of individual students; and collaborating with other school personnel to promote health education and a healthy learning environment for students and staff. Specifically, the school nurse organizes, provides, and/or oversees the provision of health assessments for individual students and referrals for health management or treatment.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Provides direct health services and/or health counseling to assist students, families, and staff in making informed decisions on choices related to health. 
    • Follows student healthcare plans, health management protocols, and policies for all students with health needs. 
    • Interprets and/or oversees the interpretation of a student’s health status to parents/guardians and school personnel. 
    • Identifies or assists in identification, referrals, and follow through on child abuse and neglect reporting as required by law. Reports suspected physical and sexual abuse and neglect of children as mandated by law
    • Follows procedures and protocols for the prevention and management of injuries and acute and chronic illness. 
    • Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases through the implementation of early detection, intervention, and preventative immunization programs, surveillance reporting, as appropriate, to the Vermont Department of Health, and follow-up of contagious diseases. 
    • Using the nursing process, identifies, assesses, plans, intervenes, and evaluates student health concerns, including physical and mental health needs and injuries.
    • Provides chronic disease management and education, including such nursing procedures as ventilator care, gastrostomy feedings, tracheostomy care, catheterizations, etc., 
    • Demonstrates cultural competence working with diverse groups across race, ethnicity, religion, gender, class, and sexuality to communicate health needs to students and families who do not speak English. 
    • Utilizes equipment for medical diagnosis and treatment, general office equipment (including the computer) for documentation, organization and management. 
    • Complies with OSHA standards, ADA, FERPA, HIPPA, and Right-To-Know requirements.
    • The school nurse substitutes performs their duties in a manner consistent with professional standards, the Vermont State Nurse Practice Act, other state and local statutes and/or regulations applicable to school nursing practice and adheres to school district policies.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

 Education & Experience:

    • Minimum Required: Bachelor of Science from an accredited school of Nursing
    • Unencumbered VT or compact Registered Nurse license
    • Certification Required: Current CPR/AED. 
    • Minimum Required: 2 years or 2000 hours of clinical nursing experience beyond nursing education.

    • The job requires walking, standing, bending, kneeling and lifting/carrying work related items such as medical equipment, books, papers, etc.

      Demonstrate commitment towards professional growth and educational achievement for all students within the BSD.
    • Reviews and evaluates own job performance and maintains professional development through in-service and /or self-directed professional growth activities. This is evidenced by:
      • Attend conferences and seminars to keep skills up to date and to stay current on the latest advances in health care.
      • Participates in professional development and networking with other school nurses and keeps skills current with speakers and lectures.
  • SALARY: As per the Master Agreement between the Burlington Board of School Commissioners and the Burlington Education Association. This position is paid Bi-Weekly
