Special Education Teacher
Under general supervision of the Assistant Principal, the incumbent is responsible for teaching and supervising a class with intellectual disabilities, autism and multiple disabilities students utilizing various techniques to promote learning. Duties include planning, organizing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating class activities, developing Individualized Education Plans (IEP) and working with assigned staff, therapists and students to achieve the IEP goals and objectives. The incumbent is responsible for supervising assigned students and classroom staff insuring that students and staff are compliant with all school policies and procedures. This position requires close supervision of students which includes the ability to keep up with running children and or to lift or assist with lifting students is essential to perform this task. An important aspect of the job is gaining knowledge of and implementing the assigned student’s Individual Education Plan goals and objectives as well as ensuring accurate data collection and documentation of same In accordance with the federal wage-hour laws.
This is a salaried position and is not subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act’s (FLSA) minimum wage and overtime pay requirements.
Minimum Acceptable Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in special education, and holds or is eligible for District of Columbia teaching certification with appropriate endorsement. Prior teaching/instructional experience with individuals with intellectual disabilities, autism, and multiple disabilities is preferred. Hours of Work - 7:50 AM to 4:00 PM- Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 7:50 AM to 3:10 PM – Wednesday
St. Coletta of Greater Washington is a non-profit organization, which serves children and adults with intellectual disabilities, autism, or multiple disabilities. Our special education school serves students ages 3-22 years old. Each student has an IEP, and in addition to participating in classroom activities, is able to receive various forms of therapy on campus. Our core program includes: functional academics, skills of daily living, community based instruction, adaptive physical education, arts education, computer skills and vocational training. The school is located in Washington, DC, and community based instruction is an important part of the programming, as are activities focused on teaching vocational and life skills. Our Adult Programs offers adults ages 18 and older opportunities to participate in vocational / pre-vocational training, supported employment, life skills training, and community integration in order to achieve greater independence.
